The Mukhyamantri Bijli Bill Bhugtan Samadhan Yojana launched by Vishnu Deo Sai is expected to provide major financial relief to economically weaker electricity consumers who were severely affected during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The scheme, introduced on March 12, aims to assist consumers who were unable to pay their electricity bills due to financial hardship during the pandemic and subsequent economic slowdown. Through this initiative, eligible consumers will receive concessions on their pending electricity bills, helping them settle long-standing dues.

Relief for Low-Income and Agricultural Consumers

The scheme primarily targets low-tension domestic consumers, Below Poverty Line (BPL) households and agricultural electricity users. Under the scheme, pending electricity dues calculated as of March 31, 2023 will be considered as the base amount, and eligible consumers will receive concessions on both the principal amount and the surcharge.

According to estimates, more than 2.9 million electricity consumers across Chhattisgarh are expected to benefit from the initiative, with total relief amounting to nearly ₹758 crore. Officials say this is one of the largest financial relief measures ever announced in the state’s power sector.

Impact of Pandemic on Electricity Billing

During the COVID-19 pandemic, strict health protocols and restrictions prevented meter readings for several months. As a result, many consumers received combined electricity bills for multiple months, making it difficult for financially struggling households to pay the accumulated amounts.

The weakened economic conditions during the pandemic further aggravated the problem, leaving many families unable to clear their dues. The new scheme has been designed to address these challenges and offer a practical solution to affected consumers.

Registration Now Open

Registration for the scheme has begun at all electricity distribution centres and offices across the state. Consumers can also enroll through the Mor Bijli App for added convenience.

The scheme will remain effective until June 30, 2026, allowing consumers adequate time to complete the registration process and settle their dues.

Camps to Be Held in Villages

To ensure the benefits reach people at the grassroots level, the state government plans to organize special camps in villages across the state. These camps will help eligible consumers register under the scheme and receive guidance on clearing their electricity dues.

After clearing pending bills under this initiative, eligible consumers will also become eligible to receive benefits under the M-Urja Yojana.

Encouraging Regular Payments

Officials say the scheme will not only provide financial relief to lakhs of consumers but will also encourage regular payment of electricity bills in the future.

The state government has appealed to consumers to complete their registration within the stipulated period and contact officials at the nearest distribution centre in case of any doubts or assistance during the payment process.
