In a proud moment for Chhattisgarh, Rajnandgaon district has been recognized among the top three districts in the country for its outstanding performance in the “Jal Sanchar Competition” organized by the Ministry of Jal Shakti, Government of India. The district will be honored with an award of ₹2 crore for its remarkable achievements in water conservation through community participation.

The success is being attributed to the collective efforts of community organizations, citizens, public representatives, entrepreneurs from the business sector, local administration, frontline staff, and laborers. Together, their determination transformed the water conservation campaign into a mass movement.
Hundreds of water conservation structures were constructed with public support across the district, while grassroots campaigns educated villagers on water-saving practices. Sustainable solutions were designed with people’s participation at the center, ensuring long-term impact.
Rajnandgaon’s recognition is also credited to the exemplary role played by Padma Shri awardee Phoolbasan Yadav and her women’s groups, who organized the “Neer aur Naari Jal Yatra” (Water and Women Awareness March). Their leadership galvanized women’s participation, making community involvement the cornerstone of the district’s achievement.

The Jal Shakti Ministry had organized this national-level competition to promote public participation in water conservation, augmentation, and management across districts. The evaluation focused on criteria such as construction of water structures, innovative practices, public awareness, and sustainability of outcomes.
With this achievement, Rajnandgaon has set an inspiring example for other districts across the country, showing that community-led action is the key to permanent water solutions. Officials emphasized that the district’s success underscores the urgent need for prioritizing water use, conservation, and groundwater recharge for the future.
As the slogan goes: “If there is water, there is tomorrow.”
