Ahead of the upcoming Ganesh Chaturthi festival, Rajnandgaon Municipal Commissioner Shri Atul Vishwakarma conducted a detailed inspection of Ganesh idol-making workshops within the city limits. During his visit, he examined the ongoing idol-making processes and interacted directly with the artisans to ensure compliance with environmental norms.

The Commissioner emphasized the complete prohibition on the use of Plaster of Paris (POP) for idol making, as per government guidelines. He explained that POP does not dissolve in water and poses a serious threat to aquatic ecosystems, polluting rivers and ponds during idol immersion.

During the inspection, artisans informed Shri Vishwakarma that they are strictly using natural materials such as kali mitti (black clay) or kachhari mitti sourced from the banks of local ponds, mixed with straw (para) for crafting the idols. They assured him that no POP is being used in the production of any idols, large or small.

The Commissioner firmly warned that if POP is found to be used at any workshop or in idols sold in the market, strict punitive action would be taken, including seizure of the idols. He also directed the Health Department and Revenue staff to continuously monitor idol-making sites and take immediate action in case of any violation.

Additionally, Shri Vishwakarma inspected locations where Ganesh idols are traditionally installed during the festival. He advised local organizers to set up pandals at designated spots in accordance with administrative guidelines, ensuring that traffic flow is not disrupted.

Health Officer Shri Rajesh Mishra and other municipal officials were present during the inspection.
