In a significant step towards reducing maternal mortality and ensuring safe motherhood, the Rajnandgaon district administration is strengthening antenatal care services under the Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan (PMSMA). The initiative aims to provide comprehensive and quality prenatal care to all pregnant women, especially those identified as high-risk.
Special Health Camps Twice a Month
As part of the campaign, special health camps are being organised on the 9th and 24th of every month across the district. These camps focus on thorough antenatal checkups, counselling, and identifying complications at an early stage.
Under the guidance of Collector Jitendra Yadav, health teams are conducting regular checkups for high-risk pregnant women. Additionally, health workers make weekly phone calls to monitor their health status, address concerns and provide medical guidance.
Daily Home Visits Before Delivery
To ensure close monitoring, Mitanins are visiting the homes of pregnant women daily, starting 15 days prior to the expected date of delivery. This initiative helps ensure timely medical support, complete vaccination and preparedness for safe institutional delivery.

Free Sonography Through Public–Private Coordination
In a special initiative, the district administration has partnered with private diagnostic centres for free sonography services. At Vidhi Diagnostic Centre, private sonologist Dr. Amit Modi conducted free sonography for six high-risk pregnant women, enabling timely detection and treatment of complications.
Officials stated that these efforts under PMSMA have significantly contributed to improving maternal health indicators and reducing risks associated with childbirth.
Focus on High-Risk Pregnancies
The key objective of the PMSMA is to ensure free screening, treatment and counselling for women facing high-risk conditions such as:
- Previous C-section delivery
- History of miscarriage or stillbirth
- Low height or underweight
- Early teenage pregnancy
- Severe anaemia
- High blood pressure
- Diabetes
- Other serious medical conditions
Sonography is strongly recommended for such women to assess foetal health and monitor pregnancy complications.
The programme continues to strengthen the district’s maternal health system, ensuring that no pregnant woman remains deprived of essential health services.
