The Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is bringing new hope to families across India, transforming lives with solar-powered self-reliance. A shining example is Hemant Kumar Pandey, a resident of Sahdev Nagar, Rajnandgaon, who has not only reduced his electricity bills to zero but is now generating surplus energy.
In November 2024, Mr. Pandey installed two rooftop solar panels of 3 kW each, worth ₹4.20 lakh. Under the central government’s scheme, he received a subsidy of ₹78,000 per unit (₹1.56 lakh total), along with an additional ₹30,000 per unit from the state government. This support reduced his net investment cost by nearly half.
Earlier, his electricity bills ranged between ₹1,200–1,500 per month, often exceeding ₹2,000 during summers. Since installing the solar panels, however, his bills have been zero. Moreover, he has deposited 1,720 and 1,918 surplus units into the grid, which can be used later when required.

Inspired by the savings, Mr. Pandey has also purchased two electric vehicles (EVs), significantly cutting down his fuel expenses. “This scheme is extremely beneficial for common citizens,” he said. “It not only ensures financial savings but also contributes to environmental protection.”
Highlighting the importance of renewable energy, he emphasized that natural resources like coal, petrol, and diesel are limited, while solar energy is infinite and clean. He urged citizens to adopt solar power, ensuring both energy independence and environmental conservation.
Expressing gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, he appealed to the public to take advantage of the scheme and support India’s journey toward becoming self-reliant in the energy sector.
