Prime Minister says devotion to Mahaprabhu took precedence over Washington visit after G7 Summit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, currently on a visit to Odisha during the sacred Jagannath Yatra season, revealed in a public address that he had politely declined an invitation from former U.S. President Donald Trump to visit Washington, citing his spiritual commitment to the land of Mahaprabhu.
Speaking before a large crowd in Bhubaneshwar, PM Modi recounted a recent interaction he had while attending the G7 Summit in Canada. According to the Prime Minister, Trump reached out to him over a phone call and extended a warm invitation for a dinner meeting in the United States capital.
“Just two days ago, I was in Canada for the G7 summit and the US President Trump called me,” Modi said. “He said, since you have come to Canada, go via Washington, we will have dinner together and talk. He extended the invitation with great insistence.”
However, Modi explained that despite the significance of the diplomatic gesture, he chose spiritual commitment over statecraft at that moment.
“I told the US President, thank you for the invitation. It is very important for me to go to the land of Mahaprabhu, and hence I politely declined his invitation. Your love and devotion to Mahaprabhu brought me to this land,” he told the cheering crowd.
The Prime Minister’s remarks drew enthusiastic applause from attendees, many of whom had gathered to witness the traditional Rath Yatra festivities in Odisha. The statement is seen as a powerful blend of diplomacy and spiritual conviction, reflecting Modi’s longstanding tradition of aligning national leadership with cultural roots.
His comments also underline the importance the government places on India’s cultural and spiritual identity, particularly in times of global engagement and foreign policy commitments.
