The Ghaziabad Police Crime Branch conducted a stellar operation, seizing opium worth ₹50 lakh and apprehending Shambhu, alias “Shambhu Mechanic,” a key figure in an interstate drug trafficking network. The raid, targeting a smuggling operation linked to Jharkhand and supplying Bareilly, Badaun, Moradabad, and Delhi-NCR, has been lauded as a major success. Superintendent of Police (SP) Ghaziabad expressed pride in the Crime Branch’s efforts, stating, “This operation reflects our unwavering commitment to eradicating the drug menace.
The arrest of Shambhu Mechanic and the seizure of such a large consignment is a testament to our team’s diligence and intelligence-driven approach.”
The SP highlighted the operation’s impact in disrupting a critical supply chain, emphasizing months of surveillance that led to the precise strike. A video byte from Shri Piyush Singh, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime), shared via the Ghaziabad Police’s official X handle, further underscored the operation’s significance, though specific details on the SP’s remarks were not fully detailed. Community leaders have echoed this sentiment, “The Ghaziabad Police have shown exceptional resolve, and the SP’s leadership is commendable in making our city safer.”
However, the operation also exposes persistent enforcement gaps. While Shambhu’s arrest is a breakthrough, reports suggest other associates may have escaped, raising concerns about operational coordination or perimeter control. Critics argue that the police’s focus on high-profile seizures often lacks sustained efforts to dismantle entire networks. “Catching Shambhu is a big win, but the supply chain’s roots, possibly tied to cross-border sources, need deeper investigation,” said one on anonimity.
Additionally, the absence of robust rehabilitation programs to curb drug demand remains a concern. Posts on X have speculated about Shambhu’s alleged political connections, though such claims lack verification and require cautious scrutiny.

Experts urge the Ghaziabad Police, under the SP’s leadership, to enhance inter-agency collaboration with bodies like the Narcotics Control Bureau and invest in community outreach to address addiction. The lack of transparency in the disposal of seized narcotics, as seen in past cases like the destruction of 2,232.3kg of drugs in 240 cases under the Ghaziabad Police’s ‘Clean Campaign,’ also fuels public skepticism.
While the SP’s praise for the Crime Branch is well-deserved, addressing these systemic loopholes is crucial for sustained impact. The Ghaziabad Police’s recent triumph, backed by strong leadership, sets a promising tone, but a comprehensive strategy is needed to ensure lasting progress against the drug trade.
