In a significant development for Chhattisgarh’s ongoing battle against left-wing extremism, security forces neutralized a hardcore Naxalite during an encounter in the dense forests of Bijapur district on September 27, 2025. The operation, involving a joint team of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), District Reserve Guard (DRG), and CoBRA commandos, unfolded early in the morning near the Karregutta hills, a known Maoist stronghold. According to police reports, the encounter began when the patrolling team came under heavy fire from a group of armed insurgents, leading to a fierce exchange that lasted over two hours.

The slain Naxalite has been identified as a mid-level commander affiliated with the People’s Liberation Guerrilla Army (PLGA), carrying a bounty of approximately ₹8 lakh on his head. The forces recovered a substantial cache of weapons from the site, including an INSAS rifle, a country-made pistol, and over 50 improvised explosive devices (IEDs), along with gelatin sticks and Maoist literature. This haul is expected to disrupt several planned sabotage activities in the region. Bijapur, part of the Bastar division, has been a hotbed of Naxal violence, with over 150 insurgents killed in encounters this year alone.

Officials hailed the operation as a “decisive strike” in the state’s anti-Naxal campaign, crediting intelligence inputs from local sources and advanced surveillance technology. Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai commended the forces, stating, “This victory brings us closer to a Naxal-free state, ensuring safety for our tribal brothers and sisters.” However, Maoist groups have retaliated in the past with attacks on civilians, prompting heightened alerts in adjacent districts like Dantewada and Sukma.

Human rights activists have urged for thorough investigations to confirm the identity and circumstances of the encounter, emphasizing the need to minimize collateral damage in these remote areas. As the state gears up for its silver jubilee celebrations in November, such operations underscore the persistent security challenges in India’s “Rice Bowl.”
