Mumbai Police Turn Heroes, Rescue Students from Flooded School Bus Amid Torrential Rains

Swift Action Saves Six Children and Staff Stranded in Waterlogged Matunga

In a display of bravery and quick thinking, Mumbai Police rescued six schoolchildren, two female staff members, and a driver from a Don Bosco High School bus stranded in severe waterlogging near Gandhi Market, Matunga, on Monday morning. Heavy rainfall battered the city, causing widespread flooding and traffic disruptions, but the timely intervention by the Matunga Police team ensured the safety of those trapped in the perilous situation.

The incident occurred around 11:45 AM when the school bus, carrying students from Don Bosco High School, broke down on a flooded road near Kings Circle. With water levels rising to waist-deep, the children and staff were trapped inside for nearly an hour, unable to exit safely. Alerted by a local journalist, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 4) Ragasudha R and Senior Police Inspector Ravindra Pawar, along with their team, rushed to the scene.

Within minutes, the officers waded through the inundated road, carrying the children to safety and escorting the staff and driver to the Matunga Police Station.Heartwarming visuals of the rescue operation show police officers in yellow raincoats carefully carrying the children, some with backpacks and water bottles, through the floodwaters. At the police station, the children were provided with biscuits to comfort them while they waited for their parents to pick them up.

The compassionate and efficient response from the police has been widely praised by the community.The heavy rains, which dumped over 54 mm of rainfall across Mumbai in the past 24 hours, with eastern and western suburbs recording 72 mm and 65 mm respectively, led to severe waterlogging in areas like Matunga, Sion, Andheri, and Chembur.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) declared a holiday for schools and colleges and urged residents to stay indoors unless necessary, while also providing the helpline number 1916 for emergencies. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for Mumbai and a red alert for neighboring districts like Raigad and Palghar, signaling continued heavy rainfall.T
