The accused was produced before the court and subsequently sent to judicial custody.

According to police, the arrested accused, Deepak Sharma, son of late Murlidhar Sharma, is a resident of Murum Khadan Lakholi Atal Awas under Kotwali Police Station limits in Rajnandgaon.

Information Received Through Cyber Crime Coordination Centre

Police said the bank accounts allegedly being used for receiving and transferring proceeds of cyber fraud were identified on the basis of information received through the coordination portal of the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre, operated by the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India.

During the investigation, police found information indicating that ₹5,41,099, allegedly earned through cyber fraud, had been received and subsequently transferred through the concerned bank account.

The action was carried out under the direction of Superintendent of Police Ankita Sharma (IPS) and under the guidance of Additional Superintendent of Police Keerti Rathore (RPS) and City Superintendent of Police Satyaprakash Tiwari (RPS).

The team acted under the leadership of City Kotwali Police Station in-charge Inspector Upendra Kumar Shah and Cyber Cell in-charge Inspector Vinay Pammar.

What Is a Mule Account?

A mule account is a bank account used by cybercriminals to receive money obtained through fraud or other illegal activities and subsequently transfer or withdraw the funds.

In several cases, criminals allegedly use a person’s bank account by offering a commission, financial inducement or other incentives.

The fraud proceeds may first be transferred into such an account and then moved to different accounts, making it difficult for investigating agencies to trace the actual source of the money.

How to Prevent Misuse of Bank Accounts

Rajnandgaon Police have appealed to citizens not to allow unknown persons to use their bank accounts, ATM cards, cheque books or mobile SIM cards.

Police have also advised citizens not to provide their bank accounts to others in exchange for commissions or under the lure of large sums of money.

Citizens have been urged to regularly monitor transactions in their bank accounts and immediately inform the police or Cyber Cell about any suspicious activity.

According to police, cybercriminals may use mule accounts in various forms of cyber fraud, including gaming applications, gambling applications, fake trading applications, sextortion and digital arrest scams.

Police said that renting out, providing or selling a bank account in exchange for a commission may lead to legal action.
