The Chhattisgarh Labour Department has suspended Labour Inspector Laxman Singh Markam with immediate effect following allegations of irregularities related to the registration of construction workers under a government welfare scheme.

According to official sources, the action was taken after prima facie irregularities were found in cases linked to the Chief Minister Construction Workers Death and Disability Assistance Scheme. The complaint was initially submitted on March 2, 2026 by the Vice-Chairperson of the District Panchayat of Janjgir–Champa district to the district administration.

The matter later gained attention in the Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly when MLA Baleshwar Sahu raised it through a calling attention motion, prompting further administrative scrutiny.

Following the complaint, the district administration ordered a preliminary inquiry under the supervision of the Collector of Janjgir–Champa district. The investigation found apparent irregularities in the approval of construction worker registration applications.

During the inquiry, the role of Labour Inspector Laxman Singh Markam, who was responsible for approving the registrations at the district labour office, came under suspicion. Based on the findings, the government ordered his immediate suspension and initiated a departmental inquiry to examine the matter in detail.

During the suspension period, Markam’s headquarters has been designated as the Office of the Assistant Labour Commissioner in Bilaspur. As per government service rules, he will be entitled to subsistence allowance during the suspension period.

The suspension order was issued on Monday by the Additional Labour Commissioner (Establishment) from the Office of the Labour Commissioner, Chhattisgarh, located in Nava Raipur, with the approval of the Labour Commissioner.

Officials said that the departmental investigation will determine the extent of the irregularities and appropriate action will be taken based on its findings.
