The Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Rajnandgaon has issued a weather-based advisory for farmers, urging them to adopt timely weed management practices in direct-seeded and transplanted paddy crops in view of the possible impact of El Niño during the ongoing kharif season.
According to Dr. Gunjan Jha, Senior Scientist and Head of KVK Rajnandgaon, irregular rainfall and moisture stress associated with El Niño can accelerate weed growth, reducing paddy yields by 30–40 percent if not managed effectively. She advised farmers to follow recommended herbicide schedules, conserve soil moisture and adopt proper water management practices to safeguard crop productivity.
Scientific Weed Management for Direct-Seeded Paddy
For direct-seeded paddy, KVK has recommended the following weed control schedule:
Pre-emergence (0–3 Days After Sowing)
Farmers may apply any one of the following:
- Pendimethalin 30 EC – 1,000 ml/ha
- Pyrazosulfuron-Ethyl – 80 g/ha
Post-emergence (15–20 Days After Sowing)
Recommended herbicides include:
- Pinoxsulam – 37.5 g/ha
- Trifloxysulfuron + Ethoxysulfuron – 90 g/ha
- Cyhalofop-Butyl – 300–320 ml/ha (for grassy weeds)
- Fenoxaprop-Ethyl – 250 ml/ha (for broadleaf weeds)
Post-emergence (20–25 Days After Sowing)
Farmers may use:
- Bispyribac Sodium – 80–100 ml/ha
- Pinoxsulam + Cyhalofop-Butyl – 882 ml/ha
- Florpyrauxifen + Pinoxsulam – 500 ml/ha
- 2,4-D Amine Salt – 344–517 ml/ha (for broadleaf weeds)
Weed Control Recommendations for Transplanted Paddy
Pre-emergence (0–3 Days After Transplanting)
KVK recommends:
- Pendimethalin – 1,000 ml/ha
- Pretilachlor – 600 ml/ha
- Pyrazosulfuron-Ethyl – 80 g/ha
- Bensulfuron Methyl + Pretilachlor – 4 kg/ha
Post-emergence (15–20 Days After Transplanting)
Farmers should apply:
- Pinoxsulam – 37.5 g/ha
- Trifloxysulfuron + Ethoxysulfuron – 90 g/ha
Post-emergence (20–25 Days After Transplanting)
Recommended options include:
- Bispyribac Sodium – 80–100 ml/ha
- Pinoxsulam + Cyhalofop-Butyl – 882 ml/ha
Important Application Guidelines
KVK has advised farmers to:
- Spray herbicides only when sufficient soil moisture is available.
- Use 375–500 litres of water per hectare during spraying.
- Avoid draining field water for 24–48 hours after herbicide application.
- Carry out manual weeding after 20–25 days, if required.
KVK Appeals to Farmers
Dr. Gunjan Jha emphasized that adopting scientific weed management practices is crucial under possible El Niño conditions. Timely control of weeds, combined with effective moisture conservation and water management, can significantly improve paddy yield and grain quality while minimizing crop losses.
KVK Rajnandgaon has appealed to farmers across the district to follow the recommended agronomic practices to ensure healthy crop growth and better returns during the kharif season.
