A palpable sense of fear has gripped Rajnandgaon as incidents of violence have surged across the city over the past several days, destabilising the peace and leaving citizens questioning the effectiveness of local law enforcement.

While the police have been rigorously cracking down on illegal betting, gambling and liquor trade, public sentiment suggests that efforts to curb street-level hooliganism have not been equally forceful.

Public Frustration Reaches Boiling Point

In fact, the intensity of the crackdown on illegal betting has reportedly pushed several operators into financial distress. Local chatter has even speculated whether SP Ankita Sharma—known for her strict policing—might be transferred soon, reflecting the disruptive impact of recent enforcement actions.

However, the situation escalated sharply two nights ago when a shocking incident at the heart of the city sparked widespread anger. At around 11 pm, a youth was brutally attacked with a knife inside Lakshmi Medical Store at the bustling Manav Mandir Chowk.

The CCTV footage of the assault went viral within minutes, causing tension to spread across the city.

Protest Erupts at Manav Mandir Chowk

Family members of the injured man, along with local residents, gathered at the spot and launched a fierce protest, raising slogans against the police. They demanded immediate and strict action against the accused, alleging that while the police were swift against gambling networks, they had failed to control rising street crimes.

Residents expressed their frustration bluntly:

“Police is strict on betting, but has been lax in stopping hooliganism in the city.”

Police Launches ‘Operation Gunda’

Amid mounting criticism and the deteriorating security climate, the Rajnandgaon Police has now shifted gears. Acting on the directions of SP Ankita Sharma, Basatnpur Police Station teams conducted late-night raids and detained several known troublemakers.

Sources confirm that similar drives are being executed across multiple police station limits, marking the beginning of a citywide crackdown.

According to officials at the SP Office:
📌 Strict action will be taken against repeat offenders, gang members, extortionists and those involved in spreading fear or violence in the city.
📌 Outside antisocial elements will also be monitored and restricted from entering the district.

Public Pins Hope on This Renewed Police Action

Worn down by the recent spike in criminal activities, residents are cautiously optimistic. Many believe that if this campaign continues consistently, normalcy may soon return.

For now, all eyes remain on the police department and the next set of actions under Operation Gunda, which could determine whether the city’s law and order crisis stabilises or spirals further.
