Fragrance of Flowers Transforms Farmer Ishwar Charan Paikara’s Fortune

Shift from Traditional Farming to Floriculture Brings Higher Profit at Lower Cost; Success Inspires Other Farmers

Compared to traditional crops such as wheat and paddy, flower cultivation is proving to be significantly more profitable, offering three to four times higher returns at relatively lower cost. Flowers such as marigold, rose and chrysanthemum remain in demand throughout the year, enabling farmers to earn consistent income across seasons.

With steady demand during weddings, festivals, religious ceremonies and social events, floriculture has emerged as a sustainable income source for farmers. Even with limited investment, the business is generating lakhs of rupees in net profit per hectare, helping farmers achieve financial self-reliance.

Government Schemes Encouraging Crop Diversification

Taking advantage of state government schemes, farmers in Raigarh district are increasingly moving beyond traditional farming practices and adopting horticulture crops. In this direction, farmer Ishwar Charan Paikara from village Gamekera in Lailunga development block has significantly increased his income by adopting flower cultivation under the National Horticulture Mission.

His success has now become a source of inspiration for other farmers in the region.

From Paddy Farming to Profitable Floriculture

Earlier, Paikara cultivated paddy through traditional methods, where income remained limited despite hard work. During the 2025–26 agricultural season, with guidance from the Horticulture Department, he started marigold cultivation on 0.400 hectare of land.

With technical support and scientific farming practices provided by the department, the results proved highly encouraging. While paddy farming earlier yielded around 11 quintals of production with modest income, marigold cultivation resulted in nearly 38 quintals of output.

The total income from flower cultivation reached approximately ₹3.04 lakh. After deducting expenses, Paikara earned a net profit of around ₹2.59 lakh—several times higher than earnings from traditional agriculture.

Inspiration for Rural Transformation

Encouraged by the success of floriculture, Paikara’s confidence has grown substantially. He now plans to expand flower cultivation further, citing higher returns within a shorter duration as a major advantage.

Rows of blooming marigold flowers in his fields now stand as a testimony to his dedication and success. Inspired by his achievements, other farmers in the village are also showing interest in horticulture crops and approaching the department to adopt flower cultivation.

The initiative demonstrates how government schemes are not only enhancing farmers’ income but also bringing a positive transformation in agricultural practices across rural areas.
