Anjora Bypass Raises Questions over Road Safety
The fatal accident has drawn attention to road safety and traffic management on Anjora Bypass, where heavy vehicles frequently travel alongside other road users.
Despite its designation as a bypass, the movement of heavy vehicles and the possibility of high speeds can pose challenges for pedestrians attempting to cross the road. People travelling between nearby connecting roads also need safe and accessible crossing points.
Residents and commuters using the route, including those travelling to and from the Bharat Mata Project area, depend on the bypass for their journeys. Drivers unfamiliar with the road may also face difficulties understanding traffic movements if directional signs and road markings are inadequate.
The availability of proper lighting, warning signs and speed-control measures is therefore an important consideration in assessing the safety of the stretch.
Need for Pedestrian Safety Measures
The concerned departments need to assess traffic conditions along the bypass and determine whether additional safety measures are required.
Potential measures include:
- Clear warning and directional signs to alert motorists to pedestrian movement and road crossings.
- Adequate street lighting near junctions and locations where people cross the road.
- Speed-control measures suited to the road’s traffic conditions.
- Safe pedestrian crossing facilities for people travelling between nearby settlements and connecting roads.
- Traffic police deployment, where necessary, to help manage vehicle movement and improve road safety.
Particular attention should be given to the safety of elderly people, children and other pedestrians who may find it difficult to cross a busy road carrying heavy vehicles.
Call for Preventive Action to Avoid Future Accidents
The death of Santram Nishad is a tragic incident that has highlighted concerns about pedestrian safety on Anjora Bypass. While the specific circumstances of the collision require investigation, the accident also underlines the importance of reviewing road conditions and traffic-management arrangements.
The key question for the concerned authorities is whether adequate safety measures can be implemented before another serious accident occurs. A timely assessment of the bypass, followed by appropriate preventive steps, could help reduce risks for pedestrians and other road users.
