In a major crackdown against online fraud, the Cyber Police of Chhattisgarh have successfully busted a large inter-state gang involved in a digital matrimonial scam under Operation Cyber Shield. Acting on technical surveillance and tip-offs, the team arrested 11 accused from Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh, seizing 36 mobile phones, several SIM cards, laptops, and ATM cards used for transferring money through fake bank accounts.
According to officials, the gang had been active for nearly two years, creating over 260 fake identities on social media and matrimonial platforms. They primarily used AI-generated or stolen photographs of women to lure men seeking marriage proposals. Once contact was established, the fraudsters would emotionally manipulate victims, asking for money under false pretenses — like medical emergencies, verification charges, or travel expenses — and then disappear once the amount was received.
Cyber Police traced multiple transactions linked to 79 mule bank accounts, most of them opened with fake documents. The suspects operated mainly from Jamshedpur (Jharkhand) and Bilaspur (Chhattisgarh), where they used rented rooms as communication centers. Officials revealed that the network was highly organized. One group handled social media accounts, another managed money transfers, and a third team coordinated phone calls with victims.

Police believe hundreds of people across India may have been duped. The investigation also revealed that the gang used advanced tools to mask their IP addresses and digital trails. Authorities have now frozen several bank accounts and requested support from major social media companies to take down fake IDs. The Chhattisgarh Cyber Police urged citizens to remain cautious while interacting with unknown profiles on social media or matrimonial sites.
They advised verifying profiles through official means before making any payments or commitments. Senior officers said, “This successful operation sends a strong message to cybercriminals that digital fraud will not go unpunished.” Further investigations are underway to trace the mastermind and identify all victims.
