The success story of farmer Suresh Sinha from Gatapar Khurd village in Rajnandgaon district reflects the positive impact of modern horticulture and government-backed agricultural initiatives. By switching from traditional paddy farming to vegetable cultivation—particularly cucumber—Sinha has not only improved his income but also transformed his family’s financial stability.

This year, Sinha cultivated cucumbers on 5.5 acres of land, earning an impressive ₹2.5 lakh, with the harvesting process still ongoing. He sells his produce at a rate of ₹15 to ₹20 per kilogram, and the cucumbers are being transported to major markets in Prayagraj (Uttar Pradesh), Odisha, and Kolkata.

Sinha attributes his financial growth to vegetable farming, which requires less water compared to paddy and offers better profit margins. “Vegetable cultivation has significantly improved my economic condition. Government schemes have played a crucial role in this transformation,” he shared.

Government Support Paving the Way

Suresh Sinha has effectively utilized various agricultural support schemes offered by the government:

  • Under the National Horticulture Mission, he received ₹17 lakh as subsidy for constructing a polyhouse, where he successfully grew capsicum (Shimla mirch) and earned ₹3.5 lakh.
  • The total cost of the polyhouse was ₹34 lakh, of which half was subsidized.
  • He also received ₹2 lakh subsidy for building a pack house to store vegetables.
  • For crop spraying, he was granted 50% subsidy on a strip machine.

Past Success and Future Plans

Last year, he cultivated tomatoes on 7 acres of land from July to March, making ₹3 lakh profit. Encouraged by the results, he plans to repeat the tomato cultivation this year with “Syngenta Kompal” Myla variety. To safeguard his investment, he has already insured the entire 7 acres under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana.

Out of his 15 acres of farmland, Sinha now devotes 8 acres to paddy and 7 acres to vegetables, achieving a balanced and profitable farming model.

He proudly notes that this financial stability has uplifted his family’s standard of living. “We’ve managed to invest in our children’s education and recently conducted our daughter’s wedding, all thanks to the income from modern farming,” he said.

Suresh Sinha’s journey is a testament to how government schemes, when effectively implemented and coupled with innovative farming, can turn agriculture into a thriving livelihood.
