Tensions flared in Hyderabad’s Banjara Hills on Thursday night as Telangana Police detained Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Madhavi Latha and other party workers during a protest against the alleged demolition of a temple by the state government. The incident, which sparked outrage among local residents and BJP supporters, has intensified the political slugfest in Telangana, with the BJP accusing the Congress-led state government of disrespecting religious sentiments.

Madhavi Latha, a prominent BJP figure, claimed that the temple, constructed on government land, was razed late Wednesday night, hurting the sentiments of the local community. “The state government demolished a temple and hurt the sentiments of the people. They are not allowing me to protest silently,” Latha stated, as police personnel were seen escorting her into a vehicle at the protest site in Banjara Hills. The demolition, according to her, was carried out without prior consultation or sensitivity toward the religious significance of the structure.

The protest saw a significant turnout of BJP leaders and supporters, who gathered to express their dissent against the state government’s actions. Visuals from the scene captured heated moments as police intervened to disperse the crowd, detaining Latha and others to prevent escalation. The BJP has condemned the police response, alleging that the authorities are stifling peaceful protests.

The state government, however, maintains that the temple was built on government land, justifying the demolition as a necessary action. This has fueled a broader debate on the balance between urban development and the preservation of religious sites, with the BJP framing the incident as an attack on Hindu sentiments under the Congress administration led by Chief Minister Revanth Reddy.

The incident follows a series of confrontations involving Madhavi Latha, who has been vocal on issues related to temple protection in Hyderabad. The detention has drawn sharp criticism from BJP leaders, who have called for a thorough investigation and accountability from the state government. As the controversy unfolds, it is likely to further polarize political discourse in Telangana, with both sides digging in their heels over the sensitive issue of religious sites.
