On the occasion of World Rabies Day, the Animal Husbandry Department appealed to pet owners to vaccinate their dogs, cats, and other domestic animals against rabies to prevent transmission through bites.
Deputy Director of Veterinary Services, Dr. Pratibha Bhosale, emphasized that puppies should receive their first anti-rabies vaccine at three months of age, followed by booster doses and annual vaccinations. Free anti-rabies vaccination campaigns are regularly conducted at the District Veterinary Hospital, Rajnandgaon.
Rabies is a virus primarily spread through animal bites, and its symptoms can take time to appear. If untreated, the disease is almost always fatal, but timely preventive measures can save lives.

Infectious patterns and symptoms:
- Dr. Tarun Ramteke, In-charge of the District Veterinary Hospital, noted that 97% of rabies cases result from dog bites. Other carriers include cats, monkeys, mongooses, foxes, and jackals.
- Early symptoms include tingling at the bite site, fever, headache, loss of practical knowledge, behavioral changes, excessive salivation, aggression, unusual vocalizations, hydrophobia (fear of water), paralysis, and eventual fatality.
- Rabies infection can sometimes take days or even years to manifest, and bites near the head or neck accelerate symptom onset.
Immediate safety measures:
- Clean the bite thoroughly with soap or antiseptic lotion.
- Seek medical attention without delay and receive the anti-rabies vaccine within 48 hours of the bite.
Authorities stressed that awareness and timely vaccination are crucial to preventing rabies-related deaths in humans and animals alike.
