No Opening-Day Paddy Procurement in Surgi and Bherregaon; Farmers Question Government Preparedness

Janpad Member Meghraj (Megha) Chandrakar slams administration as farmers return disappointed due to lack of basic arrangements

In a glaring lapse on the very first day of the paddy procurement season, no procurement could take place at the Surgi and Bherregaon Service Cooperative Societies—both identified as model villages linked to the former Chief Minister. The absence of even basic arrangements led to disappointment and frustration among farmers who had arrived early in the morning with their paddy.

Despite the government announcing the procurement date well in advance, the ground reality painted a different picture. At both centres, farmers found no functional weighing machines, no gunny bags (baradana), and insufficient staff, leaving them stranded for hours with no clarity on when procurement would begin.

Farmers expressed anger, saying the government had made big announcements but failed to ensure minimum readiness at the centres. Many returned home with loaded tractors, visibly distressed by the situation.

Statement by Janpad Member Meghraj (Megha) Chandrakar

Local resident and Janpad Member Meghraj (Megha) Chandrakar strongly criticised the administration, stating:

“Not beginning paddy procurement on the very first day is a grave injustice to farmers. The government announced the date without ensuring preparedness, causing unnecessary hardship. The lack of arrangements in Bherregaon and Surgi is clearly visible. It is the government’s responsibility to ensure farmers receive the value of their year-long hard work on time—but today it has failed completely.”

Chandrakar demanded that the administration immediately restore procurement operations, provide adequate baradana, ensure functional weighing machines, and make all necessary arrangements so that farmers can sell their paddy without difficulty.

The incident has raised serious questions about the procurement management in the district, prompting calls for urgent corrective action to prevent further disruption in the days ahead.
