The Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) at Surgi has issued a timely advisory for farmers to safeguard standing crops in view of the weather forecast predicting moderate rainfall in the coming days. The advisory focuses on disease prevention, balanced fertilizer application, and pest management to ensure healthy yields.

According to experts, fungicides and fertilizers should be applied only when the weather is clear. In paddy fields, if green algae infestation is visible, water should be drained, and a pouch of copper sulphate should be placed at the water entry point. For paddy at the tillering stage, the second dose of nitrogen fertilizer should be applied using 30 kg of urea per hectare. To prevent bacterial leaf blight, balanced fertilizer use is recommended. In case of disease incidence, 8–10 kg of potash per hectare should be sprayed.

For stem borer control, farmers are advised to spray either Cartap Hydrochloride 50 WP (1 kg per hectare) or Chlorantraniliprole (150 ml per hectare) mixed with 500 liters of water. Nitrogen application should follow recommended schedules — one-fourth of the total recommended dose (30 kg per hectare) as urea 25–30 days after transplanting, followed by 24-hour water retention in fields. The remaining 25% potash should also be applied 25–30 days post-transplanting. For sheath blight disease in paddy, Hexaconazole fungicide should be sprayed at 1 gram per liter of water.

In soybean crops, the advisory notes the emergence of girdle beetle infestation. Farmers are advised to apply Thiacloprid 21.7 SC at 750 ml per hectare. For leaf-eating caterpillars and whiteflies, pre-mixed insecticides such as Betacyfluthrin with Imidacloprid (350 ml per hectare) or Thiamethoxam-Lambda Cyhalothrin (125 ml per hectare) are recommended, which will also help control stem fly infestation.

For arhar (pigeon pea), in the initial stage of stem blight disease, copper-based fungicides (2.5 gm per liter of water) or Metalaxyl MZ (1.5 gm per liter of water) should be sprayed at 10–12 day intervals, two to three times for effective prevention. For moong and urad crops, in case of powdery mildew, soluble sulphur at 3 gm per liter of water should be applied. To control whiteflies, Imidacloprid (0.5 ml per liter of water) is suggested.

Given the forecast of moderate rainfall, KVK experts have strongly advised farmers to ensure proper drainage in moong and urad fields to avoid waterlogging damage.
