Congress MP Rajeev Shukla strongly rebutted former US President Donald Trump’s recent claim that India’s economy is “dead,” calling it a baseless and delusional statement. Speaking in the capital, Shukla emphasized the resilience and growth of India’s economy, crediting its foundation to historic economic reforms and sustained efforts across multiple governments.

Shukla highlighted the transformative economic reforms initiated under former Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao and former Finance Minister Manmohan Singh, which liberalized India’s economy in the 1990s. He further noted that former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee advanced these reforms, while Manmohan Singh’s decade-long tenure as Prime Minister strengthened the economic framework. “The current government has also worked on it,” Shukla added, asserting that India’s economic condition remains robust and far from weak.

Dismissing Trump’s remarks as a misunderstanding, Shukla criticized the former US president’s proposal to impose tariffs on nations like India and Russia. “Every nation has the right to trade with whomever it chooses,” he said, condemning attempts to restrict India’s trade partnerships, including its ties with Russia and its role in the BRICS alliance. Shukla called such actions misguided and urged for mutual respect in global trade practices.

The Congress MP’s remarks come amid heightened global economic discussions, with India continuing to assert its position as one of the world’s fastest-growing economies. Shukla’s defense underscores the nation’s confidence in its economic trajectory and its commitment to fostering international trade relations without external pressures.
