The Congress party, backed by hundreds of local residents, launched a strong protest at Basantpur police station on July 24, demanding the immediate arrest of BJP leader Sanjay Singh, the prime accused in the Mohrad firing and assault incident involving illegal sand mining. The protest comes nearly 45 days after the alleged attack on innocent villagers in Ward No. 49 of Mohrad, where armed goons reportedly fired shots and assaulted residents.

Led by City Congress President Kulbir Singh Chhabra, the protest march began from Nandai Chowk and culminated at Basantpur Police Station, where demonstrators sat on the ground with placards, shouting slogans against the BJP government. A memorandum addressed to the Governor was handed over to the Tehsildar, demanding the arrest of Sanjay Singh and his accomplices within 7 days.

Congress leaders, including former minister Dhanesh Patila, Manpur MLA Indrashah Mandavi, and Dongargarh MLA Harshita Swami Baghel, were present. They accused the BJP of shielding criminals and turning a blind eye to lawlessness under its rule.

Dhanesh Patila condemned the BJP for allegedly aiding accused criminals and warned that if justice was not delivered soon, the Congress would launch an aggressive statewide agitation, for which the BJP government would be held fully responsible.

Indrashah Mandavi said, “Rajnandgaon, once known as a peaceful town, is being destabilized by goons brought in from outside. Innocent villagers in Mohrad were assaulted and fired upon by sand mafia under political protection.”

Harshita Swami Baghel added, “Since the BJP came to power, goons have found shelter, leaving women and common citizens vulnerable. The Mohrad incident is disgraceful and clearly shows the criminal nexus being protected by the ruling party.”

City Congress President Kulbir Singh Chhabra made scathing allegations, stating that Sanjay Singh, a BJP office-bearer from Madhya Pradesh, was illegally mining sand in Mohrad. When opposed by villagers, they were attacked and shot at. Despite having vehicle numbers and evidence, no arrests have been made, he said.

“This is a clear case of political shelter to criminal activities. If arrests are not made within seven days, we will intensify our protests, including effigy burning of CM Vishnudev Sai, Home Minister Vijay Sharma, and the local MLA across every ward,” Chhabra warned.

The protest witnessed participation from a large number of Congress leaders and grassroots workers, including former mayors, city council members, social activists, youth leaders, women’s wings, minority cell representatives, and residents of Mohrad. The protest highlighted rising public anger and the demand for accountability in the administration.
