Lack of Alum Shuts Down All Water Motors, Raises Health Concerns Amid Poor Water Supply in Former CM Raman Singh’s Constituency

Water woes continue to haunt residents of Rajnandgaon as the Mohara Water Treatment Plant—responsible for the city’s drinking water supply—has virtually collapsed due to a complete lack of alum (fitkari), an essential chemical used to purify water. The situation has resulted in the shutdown of all seven water motors, with one motor reportedly damaged and awaiting repair.
Leader of Opposition in the Municipal Corporation, Santosh Pille, conducted a surprise inspection at the Mohara facility and revealed shocking lapses in basic public services. “The BJP-led civic administration has failed miserably in providing even drinking water to citizens. Despite adequate water levels in the river, the city is receiving only one round of water supply per day—and that too, untreated and dirty,” said Pille.
He squarely blamed the administration for neglecting public health in former Chief Minister Dr. Raman Singh’s own constituency. “It is alarming that even during monsoon, when water should be abundant, the people of Rajnandgaon are forced to drink contaminated water. There’s no alum at the plant, yet water is being supplied directly to homes. This is a public health hazard,” he warned.

Residents are increasingly worried about potential outbreaks of waterborne diseases such as jaundice and diarrhea. “There is a real threat of an epidemic,” Pille added, urging immediate action.
Pille further criticized the administration for failing to inform the public about the disruption in water services. “People are being kept in the dark. The water motors are either non-functional or severely damaged, but there is no urgency in repairing them. The price of this negligence is being paid by the common citizens,” he said.
Issuing a stern warning, Pille stated that if the water supply system at Mohara is not immediately restored and residents are not provided clean water twice daily, he along with Congress councillors and city residents will launch a protest in front of the Municipal Corporation office.
