Fragrance of Bastar’s soil and its rich indigenous heritage set to leave a mark on the global stage

Bastar Pandum 2026 has emerged as a mega cultural celebration of Chhattisgarh’s Bastar region, showcasing unprecedented public participation and reaffirming its status as the “Mahakumbh” of tribal culture. What began as a cultural competition has now transformed into a massive festival dedicated to preserving and promoting indigenous traditions, folk arts, and traditional lifestyles.

The festival represents the soul of Bastar, offering a vibrant platform for tribal communities to present their heritage through traditional dances, music featuring mandar and flute, colourful attire, folk crafts made of wood, bamboo and metal, indigenous cuisine, paintings, jewellery, and regional literature. Artists from across the region will perform 12 traditional cultural disciplines, reconnecting younger generations with their roots while giving local talent national and international visibility.

Historic Participation: Over 54,000 Registrations

This year’s edition has shattered all previous records. While development block–level competitions in 2025 saw participation from 15,596 artists, the figure has surged to an impressive 54,745 registrations in 2026, marking more than a threefold increase.

Dantewada district leads the chart with 24,267 registrations, the highest in the Bastar division. Kanker, Bijapur and Sukma districts have also recorded strong participation, reflecting growing awareness and pride among communities in safeguarding their cultural legacy.

Divisional-Level Events from February 7 to 9

With district-level competitions concluded, all eyes are now on the divisional-level Bastar Pandum scheduled from February 7 to 9, 2026. A total of 84 selected teams comprising 705 artists will showcase their talents during the three-day extravaganza.

The event will feature tribal dance performances by 192 artists, tribal theatre by 134 participants, and musical presentations by 65 traditional instrumentalists. Additionally, 56 participants will demonstrate indigenous culinary traditions. Exhibitions of rare forest medicines, tribal paintings, handicrafts, ornaments and regional literature will further enrich the festival, offering visitors a holistic glimpse into Bastar’s cultural wealth.

Strong Participation of Women Artists

One of the most inspiring aspects of Bastar Pandum 2026 is the balanced representation of genders. Among the 705 divisional-level participants, 340 are women and 365 are men, highlighting the vital role of women in preserving and advancing Bastar’s cultural heritage.
