The Jal Jeevan Mission has brought a transformative change to Gundardeh village in Chhuria development block of Rajnandgaon district, ensuring safe drinking water access to every household and improving the overall quality of rural life.
With a population of 1,021, Gundardeh had long struggled with severe drinking water scarcity, particularly during summer months. Rapid population growth had increased pressure on existing water sources, forcing residents—especially women—to spend hours daily arranging potable water.
Recognising the urgency of the situation, the state government initiated a planned intervention under the Jal Jeevan Mission. The process began with a detailed survey of local water sources, followed by construction of necessary infrastructure for safe water supply. This included pipeline expansion, water storage systems, and the provision of 222 household tap connections, ensuring clean drinking water now reaches every home in the village.
Since the implementation of the mission, visible improvements have been recorded in residents’ living standards. Women, who earlier spent considerable time fetching water, are now able to focus on family responsibilities and livelihood-related activities. Easy availability of safe drinking water has also contributed to better public health outcomes and enhanced sanitation practices.

The Public Health Engineering Department has played a key role in sensitising villagers about water conservation, drinking water quality, and maintenance of tap connections. These awareness initiatives have fostered a sense of responsibility among residents, encouraging community participation in protecting and sustaining the village water system.
Village Sarpanch Uma Singh said that the Jal Jeevan Mission has significantly simplified daily life in Gundardeh. “Earlier, villagers had to struggle every day for water. Today, tap water in every household has saved time and improved health and cleanliness. It has truly changed our village,” she said.
Officials noted that coordinated efforts between the Panchayat and Rural Development Department and local residents have made Gundardeh a model example of how community participation combined with government support can reshape rural infrastructure. Today, access to tap water in every home stands as a symbol of dignity, self-reliance, and sustainable development for the villagers.
