“Congress Should Stop Baseless Politics Over Liquor Issue,” Says BJP District President Komal Singh Rajput

The political temperature in Rajnandgaon has risen sharply over the controversy surrounding the opening of a premium wine shop near the Mohara bypass, with Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) District President Komal Singh Rajput launching a strong counterattack against the Congress. Accusing the Congress of indulging in “baseless and opportunistic politics” in the name of liquor, Rajput said the party had run out of real issues and was misleading the public for political mileage.

In a strongly worded statement, Rajput said it was ironic that the Congress was protesting against a liquor outlet when, during its own tenure, liquor shops operated openly at prominent locations such as Manav Mandir Chowk, the bus stand and Mahavir Chowk. “The Congress, which once allowed liquor sales in the heart of the city, is now pretending to be a champion of public morality,” he said.

Taking a personal dig, the BJP district president sarcastically reminded the Congress district president to “first look around his own house” before raising objections. Rajput claimed that bars are operating on both sides of the Congress leader’s residence and challenged him to oppose those establishments first. “Only then will his protest appear credible,” he remarked.

Rajput further alleged that several senior Congress leaders were currently lodged in jail in connection with the liquor scam, along with a number of IAS officers accused of involvement in illegal liquor trade. “It would be better if Congress leaders refrained from lecturing others on liquor-related issues,” he said, using a popular Hindi idiom to mock the party’s stance, comparing it to a sieve criticising a ladle full of holes.

Emphasising that the public is well aware of what he termed as Congress’s “agenda-driven protests,” Rajput said people understand how individuals are being instigated to oppose development-related decisions under political influence. He asserted that unnecessary political theatrics over the liquor issue would not mislead the people of Rajnandgaon.

The controversy stems from the government’s decision to open a premium wine shop near an existing country liquor outlet in the Mohara area, which has triggered protests by the Congress over the past four to five days. The party has organised demonstrations, public meetings and rallies opposing the move, directly naming and targeting BJP district president Komal Singh Rajput. Congress leaders have alleged that the wine shop is coming up in Rajput’s ward and claimed that his silence amounted to tacit support.

Rajput’s aggressive response has added a new dimension to the ongoing political tussle, transforming it from routine political sparring into a direct confrontation between the district leadership of the two major parties. With tempers flaring and allegations flying thick and fast, all eyes are now on how the Congress responds to this counterattack and what decision the administration ultimately takes regarding the disputed wine shop.
