A fresh political controversy erupted on Saturday as Rohan Jaitley, son of the late BJP stalwart Arun Jaitley, strongly refuted Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s claim that the former Union Minister had threatened him over the now-repealed farm laws. Speaking at the Annual Legal Conclave 2025 in New Delhi, Gandhi alleged that Arun Jaitley was sent by the government to warn him against opposing the farm laws, a statement that has drawn sharp criticism for its factual inaccuracy.

Rohan Jaitley swiftly corrected the timeline, stating, “My father passed away in 2019. The farm laws were introduced in 2020.” He emphasized that his father, a respected figure known for his democratic values, would never resort to threats over political differences. “More importantly, it was not in my father’s nature to threaten anyone. He was a staunch democrat who believed in building consensus through open discussions,” Rohan added, underscoring his father’s legacy of fostering dialogue rather than confrontation.
The farm laws, introduced in June 2020 as ordinances and passed in Parliament in September 2020, sparked widespread protests before being repealed in November 2021. Arun Jaitley, who served as Union Finance Minister and held key portfolios during the first term of the Modi government, passed away on August 24, 2019, making Gandhi’s claim chronologically impossible.
Rohan also urged the Congress leader to exercise caution when speaking about those who are no longer alive, saying, “I would appreciate Rahul Gandhi being mindful while speaking of those not with us. Let the departed rest in peace.” He referenced a similar instance where Gandhi had allegedly politicized the final days of former Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar, calling it equally distasteful.

The BJP echoed Rohan’s sentiments, with leaders labeling Gandhi’s remarks as “fake news” and demanding an apology. The controversy has reignited discussions about the need for factual accuracy and sensitivity in political discourse, with many praising Rohan Jaitley for defending his father’s legacy with dignity and clarity.
This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of verifying facts before making public statements, especially when they involve respected figures who can no longer respond. The rebuttal has resonated widely, highlighting Arun Jaitley’s enduring reputation as a principled leader committed to democratic values.
