Phase B development at IIT Bhilai to enhance research facilities and innovation hubs, with investments aimed at positioning Chhattisgarh as a STEM leader in central India

Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually laid the foundation stone for Phase B of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bhilai today, marking a significant step toward expanding the institute’s infrastructure and research capabilities in Durg district. The ₹500 crore project includes new academic blocks, advanced laboratories for AI, renewable energy, and biotechnology, along with hostels and a central library to accommodate 1,000 additional students.
Speaking at the event, Modi emphasized how such institutions would empower the youth of Chhattisgarh, fostering innovation and entrepreneurship to drive economic growth in mineral-rich regions. State officials revealed that the expansion aligns with the national NEP 2020, incorporating interdisciplinary courses tailored to local industries like steel and agriculture. Local industry leaders welcomed the move, anticipating collaborations that could generate thousands of jobs and spur startups.

The ceremony, attended by education ministers and academics, also highlighted IIT Bhilai’s recent achievements, including patents in sustainable mining tech.
