The 150th anniversary of the national song Vande Mataram was marked with patriotic fervor at the Regional Administrative Building of Chhattisgarh State Power Distribution Company Limited, Rajnandgaon. On this occasion, officials and employees listened to the address of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, followed by a collective singing of the national song to honor the immortal martyrs of India’s freedom struggle.

Executive Director Shirish Selat highlighted the historical significance of Vande Mataram, explaining that the song—written on 7 November 1875 by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay in a blend of Sanskrit and Bengali—played a defining role in India’s independence movement. He noted that the song was first publicly sung at the 1896 Calcutta Session of the Indian National Congress, where it was composed and rendered by Rabindranath Tagore.

Selat emphasized that during the Swadeshi Movement protesting the 1905 Partition of Bengal, Vande Mataram became a rallying cry of resistance and patriotism. Its widespread popularity led to its ban by the British, transforming its singing into an act of defiance and national pride.
