Solar Power Brings Relief to Sahdev’s Household
The Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is encouraging citizens to adopt solar energy while providing relief from electricity bills. Through the scheme, beneficiaries are installing solar panels on their rooftops, reducing their electricity expenses and encouraging other consumers to adopt solar power.
For Sahdev Verma, a resident of Alivara village in Dongargarh development block, the scheme has brought significant financial relief to his family.
Sahdev Verma earns his livelihood through wage work. With a large family and high household electricity consumption, his monthly electricity bill used to range between ₹1,600 and ₹1,800, creating a significant financial burden.
Information Received at Surya Sabha
Verma came to know about the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana during a Surya Sabha organised at the Alivara Gram Panchayat.
The Panchayat Secretary explained that rooftop solar panels were being installed under the scheme. Beneficiaries were also informed that the Central Government provides a subsidy of ₹78,000, while the State Government provides a subsidy of ₹30,000 under the scheme.
Detailed information was also provided about the benefits of installing solar panels at homes.
Considering the subsidy available under the scheme and the relief it could provide from electricity bills, Verma applied to avail the benefit.
3-kW Rooftop Solar Panel Installed
After his application was approved, a 3-kW rooftop solar panel system was installed on the roof of his house.
Soon after, he received a total subsidy of ₹1.08 lakh from the Central and State governments directly into his bank account.
Verma said that his electricity bill has now become zero, while he is saving approximately ₹1,600 to ₹1,800 every month.

In addition, when the solar system generates surplus electricity, the excess power is being supplied to the electricity department through the grid, which is expected to provide him with an additional economic benefit.
Savings Being Used for Family Needs and Children’s Education
Verma said that the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana has brought financial relief to his life and given his family hope for a better future for his children.
The savings from the electricity bill have provided financial support to the family. He said the additional income from surplus electricity generation will also provide further economic benefits.
He is now using the money saved on electricity expenses for his children’s education and other household requirements.
According to Verma, the scheme has not only reduced his household expenses but has also helped the family plan for a better future.
Solar Adoption Gains Awareness in the Village
Verma said that the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is beneficial for families across different sections of society.
The installation of a solar panel at his home has also increased awareness among villagers about adopting solar energy. Other residents are now coming forward to install solar panels on their homes.
Sahdev Verma expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai for providing subsidy under the scheme and helping families obtain relief from electricity bills.
