Ahmedabad’s skies came alive with a breathtaking display of colours and energy during the International Kite Festival 2026, held at the iconic Sabarmati Riverfront. Prime Minister Narendra Modi warmly welcomed German Chancellor Friedrich Merz to this cherished Gujarati tradition, turning the event into a memorable symbol of cultural exchange and strengthening bilateral ties.

The festival, coinciding with the spirit of Uttarayan and Makar Sankranti, featured participants from 50 countries, with 135 international kite flyers showcasing their skills alongside nearly 1,000 enthusiasts from India. The air was filled with vibrant kites of all shapes and sizes, including special ones depicting Lord Hanuman and tricolour designs that added extra patriotic flair.In a delightful highlight, Chancellor Merz tried his hand at flying a kite for the first time, guided by Prime Minister Modi.

The two leaders were seen enjoying the festive atmosphere, interacting with artisans, and taking in the traditional kite-making process after paying tributes to Mahatma Gandhi at the Sabarmati Ashram earlier in the day.

This joyful moment blended high-level diplomacy with the pure fun of India’s kite-flying heritage, showcasing the warmth of India-Germany relations during the Chancellor’s maiden official visit. The event not only celebrated Gujarat’s rich cultural legacy but also highlighted how shared experiences can bridge nations across continents.
