The Prime Minister’s Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) has laid the foundation for a fisheries revolution in Rajnandgaon district, bringing significant socio-economic change to the lives of fishermen and farmers. Through the promotion of modern aquaculture practices and infrastructure development, the scheme has substantially enhanced fish production capacity while generating large-scale employment.
Under the scheme, 1,900 fishermen have been trained in modern fish farming techniques such as cage culture, pond biofloc systems, and scientific pond construction. These interventions have helped fishermen adopt advanced methods, resulting in higher productivity and sustainable income growth. To support fisheries activities, beneficiaries have been provided with essential inputs including fish seed, nets, ice boxes, motorcycles, and pickup vehicles. Additionally, fishermen are being extended easy and affordable loans through the Kisan Credit Card (KCC) scheme.

A major achievement under PMMSY is the construction of two new fish seed hatcheries in the district, which is expected to make Rajnandgaon self-reliant in fish seed production. As a result, the district has recorded a 20 percent increase in fish seed production and a 29 percent rise in overall fish output.
Fisheries activities are also being expanded through 21 cage culture units installed in district mines and reservoirs, opening new avenues for intensive fish farming. Furthermore, to strengthen seed production and rearing capacity, three government fisheries farms and new ponds and rearing tanks over 148 hectares of private farmers’ land have been developed at a cost of ₹590.166 lakh.

These initiatives have created more than 2,500 employment opportunities in the district. Welfare measures have also been strengthened, with 11,471 fishermen beneficiaries covered under free accident insurance, 1,900 receiving skill training, and 450 beneficiaries provided with fishing nets, ice boxes, and fish seed.
Over the past two years, the fisheries sector in Rajnandgaon has witnessed a visible transformation. The Prime Minister’s Matsya Sampada Yojana has not only boosted fish production but has also enhanced farmers’ incomes, expanded employment opportunities, and reshaped the economic landscape of the district’s fisheries sector.
