Hard work, proper guidance and access to government support can turn available resources into a strong foundation for self-reliance. Shambhu Nishad, a resident of Sankara village in Rajnandgaon development block, has demonstrated this through his experience with fish farming.
By benefiting from the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), Nishad constructed a pond and a nursery pond and developed fish farming as an effective source of income. He is currently earning a net annual income of around ₹2 lakh from fish farming.
₹74,400 Assistance Helped Establish Systematic Fish Farming
Shambhu Nishad was already traditionally involved in fish farming along with agricultural and horticultural activities. With the objective of adopting a more systematic and scientific approach to fish farming, he contacted officials of the Fisheries Department.
Following departmental guidance, he constructed a pond and nursery pond over 0.31 hectare under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana.

Under the scheme, he received a grant of ₹74,400. After this, he stocked fish seed in the pond as per departmental technical guidance and began fish farming using modern and scientific methods.
Through sustained efforts and better management, Nishad is currently producing approximately 2,000 to 2,500 kilograms of fish annually.
Fish Farming Generates ₹2 Lakh Net Income
Shambhu Nishad said that during 2024–25, he earned a net income of around ₹2 lakh from fish production.
The additional income generated through fish farming has strengthened his family’s financial condition. He is now continuing fish farming alongside his agricultural and horticultural activities.
Additional Income Supporting Children's Technical Education
The benefits of increased income are also visible in the family’s future planning. The additional earnings from fish farming are helping support his children’s higher education at a technical college.
For Shambhu Nishad, the assistance received under the scheme has become a means of strengthening his family’s financial position while also supporting better educational opportunities for his children.
Shambhu Nishad expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai for the assistance received for the construction of the pond and nursery pond under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana and for the technical guidance provided by the department.
