In a significant development, India and Pakistan have agreed to a full and immediate ceasefire, effectively halting the recent escalation of military tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbors. The announcement, made on Saturday, brings relief to a region gripped by days of intense cross-border strikes and heightened fears of a broader conflict.
The ceasefire agreement was confirmed by India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri and Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, following direct communication between the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMO) of both nations. The Pakistani DGMO initiated a call at 3:35 PM IST, leading to an understanding to cease all firing and military actions on land, air, and sea, effective from 5:00 PM IST.

The breakthrough follows days of intense hostilities sparked by a deadly terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, on April 22, 2025, which India attributed to Pakistan-based terrorist groups. The Indian military’s subsequent “Operation Sindoor” targeted terror launchpads across the Line of Control, escalating into a series of retaliatory strikes, including drone attacks and missile interceptions. Both nations reported casualties, with India confirming at least 16 deaths from Pakistani shelling and Pakistan alleging significant losses from Indian strikes.

US President Donald Trump announced the ceasefire on his Truth Social platform, claiming credit for mediating “a long night of talks” between the two nations. “Congratulations to both Countries on using Common Sense and Great Intelligence,” Trump posted, a statement echoed by US Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who commended the leadership of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for choosing peace. However, Indian sources emphasized that the agreement was reached directly between the two countries, downplaying the extent of US involvement.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres welcomed the de-escalation, urging both nations to pursue sustained peace. Political leaders in India, including Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, expressed relief, with the latter calling for greater transparency on the terms of the ceasefire. In Pakistan, celebrations were reported in Peshawar and Muzaffarabad, where residents expressed hope for lasting stability.

Despite the ceasefire, India has maintained a firm stance, with the Ministry of External Affairs stating that the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty and a visa ban on Pakistani nationals will remain in place. Indian Air Commodore Raghu Nair reiterated the country’s readiness to protect its sovereignty, signaling that the ceasefire is conditional on Pakistan curbing cross-border terrorism.

The agreement has also paved the way for practical measures, with Pakistan announcing the reopening of its airspace to all traffic shortly after the ceasefire. Meanwhile, India’s Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is exploring options to resume the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, which was suspended due to the conflict.

As both nations take stock of the fragile peace, the international community remains watchful, hopeful that this ceasefire will mark a step toward de-escalation and dialogue in a region long plagued by conflict.
