The Chhattisgarh High Court today quashed the suspension of a prominent university professor in Raipur, terming the university’s decision a “gross miscarriage of natural justice” and a direct assault on academic autonomy.
The case involved Dr. Anjali Verma, a history lecturer at Pt. Ravishankar Shukla University, who was suspended last month over alleged procedural lapses in research funding without a proper inquiry or hearing. In a strongly worded judgment, the bench led by Justice Rakesh Kumar Arun directed her immediate reinstatement with full back wages and a nominal compensation of ₹2 lakh for mental harassment.

The court lambasted the administration for bypassing due process, including the absence of a show-cause notice and reliance on unverified complaints, drawing parallels to Supreme Court precedents on fair hearings. Legal experts hailed the verdict as a safeguard for educators amid rising campus disputes, urging universities to adopt transparent grievance mechanisms.
The professor, in a post-ruling statement, expressed relief and called for broader reforms to protect dissent in academia. This ruling is likely to set a precedent for similar cases in the state, reinforcing the judiciary’s role in upholding constitutional rights within educational institutions.
