The maiden election of the newly constituted Ghumka Nagar Panchayat has now transformed into a prestige battle between major political parties. After receiving Nagar Panchayat status last year, the town is witnessing its first electoral exercise, attracting widespread political attention across the district.
Election Schedule Announced
The nomination process began on May 19, while withdrawal of nominations will take place on May 20 and 21. Election symbols will also be allotted on May 21, after which campaigning is expected to intensify significantly. Polling is scheduled for June 1, and counting of votes will be held on June 4.
Despite having only around 3,200 voters, the political significance of the election has turned it into one of the most discussed contests in the district.
Assembly-Like Political Atmosphere
Local residents say that daily rallies, public meetings, and show-of-strength events have created an atmosphere similar to a state assembly election rather than a small urban body poll. Continuous political mobilization by both parties has heightened public engagement and competition.
The Nagar Panchayat has been divided into 15 wards, and parties are leaving no stone unturned to secure electoral advantage.
Social Equations Shape Candidate Selection
Both the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Indian National Congress have strategically fielded candidates from the influential Lodhi community, keeping local social dynamics in mind.
- BJP has nominated Kiran Verma as its candidate.
- Congress has fielded Phoolwati Verma.
Given the strong presence of the Lodhi community in the region, the contest is being viewed as highly competitive and politically significant.

Political Background and Ground Dynamics
Political analysts note that the region has witnessed strong BJP influence over the past 10–12 years, with the party maintaining an electoral edge in several contests. This has led observers to consider BJP slightly ahead at the initial stage. However, Congress has launched an aggressive campaign, ensuring a closely fought election.
Senior Congress leaders, including former Cabinet Minister Dhanesh Patil, Khairagarh MLA Yashoda Verma, and district leader Jeetu Yadav, have been actively campaigning.
On the BJP side, prominent leaders such as former MP Abhishek Singh, Rajnandgaon Mayor Madhusudan Yadav, former MLAs Vinod Khandekar and Ramji Bharti, former Khairagarh MLA Komal Janghel, District Cooperative Central Bank Chairman Sachin Singh Baghel, and former District Panchayat President Dinesh Gandhi are continuously engaged in election activities.
Beyond a Local Election
Although Ghumka is small in terms of geographical size and voter base, political observers believe the election carries symbolic importance. The outcome is expected to send a broader political message ahead of future electoral contests in the region.
For BJP, the challenge lies in retaining its established voter base, while Congress views the election as an opportunity to build momentum against the ruling side.
With both parties investing significant political energy, the first Ghumka Nagar Panchayat election has emerged as one of the most talked-about political battles in Rajnandgaon district.
