In a significant example of crop diversification, farmer Daulatram Sahu of Janglesar village in Rajnandgaon development block has opted for coriander cultivation over traditional summer paddy on 2.5 acres of land. The shift reflects the growing interest among farmers in horticulture crops across the district.
The initiative is being promoted by the Horticulture Department, which is encouraging farmers to move away from water-intensive summer paddy cultivation and adopt alternative crops that offer better returns with lower input costs. As part of departmental assistance, Daulatram received 20 kilograms of coriander seed to support the transition.

Speaking about his decision, Daulatram said he chose coriander keeping crop rotation and soil health in mind. He expects to benefit particularly from green coriander produce during the March–April season, when market demand remains strong.
He highlighted several advantages of crop diversification. Compared to paddy, coriander requires significantly less water, improves soil fertility, involves lower production costs and is less prone to disease. “Other crops are proving more profitable than paddy, especially when input costs and water usage are considered,” he noted.
Agricultural experts have consistently emphasized the need for diversification in Chhattisgarh’s farming system to reduce overdependence on paddy and ensure sustainable use of resources. Farmers are increasingly exploring pulses, oilseeds and horticulture crops as viable alternatives.
Daulatram also welcomed the state government’s announcement regarding procurement of crops such as gram (chana), mustard and other produce, which he said would further benefit farmers by providing assured market support.

He further expressed happiness over the recent decision of the Chhattisgarh Cabinet to provide differential payment to paddy farmers who sold their produce at the Minimum Support Price. Under the decision, farmers will receive a lump-sum payment calculated at ₹3,100 per quintal before the Holi festival. “This is a very positive step and a matter of great happiness for farmers,” he said.
The growing shift towards horticulture crops like coriander reflects broader efforts to strengthen farm incomes, promote sustainable agriculture and encourage efficient water management in the district.
