ED Raids Intensify in Chhattisgarh: Builders Targeted in Money Laundering Probe

Simultaneous Searches in Raipur and Bilaspur Uncover Alleged Illicit Transactions

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) escalated its crackdown on financial irregularities in Chhattisgarh with coordinated raids at over a dozen locations in Raipur and Bilaspur on September 26, 2025, focusing on prominent builders accused of money laundering. The operations, part of a larger investigation under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), involved sleuths poring through documents, digital records, and cash stashes linked to real estate projects worth hundreds of crores.

Sources indicate that the raids stem from complaints of hawala transactions and benami properties used to siphon funds from government tenders and urban development schemes. By evening, ED teams had seized incriminating ledgers, unaccounted cash exceeding ₹2 crore, and gold jewelry valued at ₹50 lakh, with the probe expanding to include political connections.

The targeted firms are allegedly involved in constructing affordable housing and commercial complexes under the state’s Smart City initiatives, raising fears of corruption in public-private partnerships. Chhattisgarh’s anti-corruption bureau has been roped in for parallel inquiries, amid speculation of links to the previous Congress regime.

BJP leaders have welcomed the action as a “clean-up drive,” while opposition figures decry it as politically motivated ahead of local polls. This is the third major ED sweep in the state this year, following probes into liquor and mining scams that led to high-profile arrests. As the nation watches India’s anti-graft machinery in action, these raids could expose systemic rot in Chhattisgarh’s realty boom, potentially derailing ongoing infrastructure projects and eroding investor confidence.
