Amid national outrage over yet another pharmaceutical scandal, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has approved Rs 4 lakh in financial aid for the families of 11 children who tragically died in Chhindwara district after consuming contaminated Coldrif cough syrup, with announcements made on October 4, 2025, and support rolling out immediately.
Lab analysis from the Government Drug Testing Laboratory in Chennai confirmed the presence of toxic Diethylene Glycol—a cheap substitute for glycerin linked to previous tragedies like the 2023 Gambia incident—in the syrup manufactured by Sresan Pharmaceuticals in Tamil Nadu.

In response, the state has imposed a complete ban on its sale, launched statewide raids to seize remaining stocks, and initiated a joint investigation with central authorities to probe supply chains and regulatory lapses. The victims, aged 2 to 8, fell ill with acute kidney failure symptoms in late September, highlighting gaps in pediatric drug safety.
Health officials are conducting awareness drives in rural areas, urging parents to verify product authenticity, while the incident has sparked calls for stricter national quality controls. The compensation, to be honored publicly on Republic or Independence Day, aims to provide solace, but experts warn of broader implications for public trust in over-the-counter medicines.
