In a significant boost for the state’s agrarian economy, the Chhattisgarh cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Vishnu Dev Sai, convened on October 11, 2025, and greenlit the commencement of paddy procurement operations from November 15 this year. This timely announcement comes as farmers across the rice bowl districts of Raipur, Bilaspur, and Durg brace for the harvest season, with officials estimating a bumper yield of over 80 lakh metric tonnes based on favorable monsoon patterns.
The decision, detailed in the meeting’s communique, includes enhanced minimum support prices aligned with central guidelines, alongside provisions for digital mandi platforms to streamline sales and reduce middlemen interference. Agriculture Minister Ravindra Choubey highlighted the move’s role in shielding growers from market volatility, noting that last year’s procurement fetched over ₹25,000 crore for 75 lakh farmers.

Implementation teams are already mobilizing procurement centers, with quality testing labs upgraded for faster turnaround. However, farmer unions have called for bonus incentives to offset escalating fertilizer and labor costs, urging the government to expedite subsidy disbursements. This policy shift underscores the BJP-led administration’s focus on agricultural reforms, aiming to position Chhattisgarh as a leading grain surplus state while addressing climate-induced risks like erratic rains.
