In a significant push towards women’s empowerment and rural development, the Chhattisgarh Government has approved the construction of 166 Mahatari Sadan across the state. The initiative, spearheaded by Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Sharma, has been allocated a budget of ₹49.80 crore.
Under this scheme, Rajnandgaon district will see the construction of seven Mahatari Sadan at a cost of ₹2.10 crore. Each centre will be built with an allocation of ₹30 lakh. The identified villages include Surgi, Deelapahari, and Tedesra in Rajnandgaon block; Kumarada in Chhuria block; and Arjuni, Mohad, and Mohara in Dongargarh block.

Deputy CM Sharma emphasized that Mahatari Sadan will serve as a hub for women’s collective activities, capacity building, and self-reliance. Each centre will be constructed on 2,500 sq. ft. of land and include a hall, meeting room, veranda, kitchen, storeroom, tube well with water harvesting, boundary wall, and community toilets.
“This project was conceived after repeated requests from rural women who lacked a dedicated space for meetings and skill development. Now, Mahatari Sadan will not only provide them with a safe venue but also opportunities for income generation and social participation,” Sharma said.
So far, the state has approved 368 Mahatari Sadan, with more than 50 already completed. The government aims to establish such centres in all gram panchayats within the next five years.
Sharma added that under the leadership of Chief Minister Vishnudev Sai and with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat, the state is committed to ensuring that women play an integral role in India’s growth cycle. Mahatari Sadan is one such initiative aligning women’s empowerment with the nation’s development journey.

The Panchayat and Rural Development Department has prepared a standard design and cost estimate to maintain uniformity in construction. Beyond infrastructure, these centres are expected to foster solidarity among women, support entrepreneurship, and create platforms for training and self-help groups.
With its phased implementation, the initiative seeks to transform rural landscapes by making women not just participants but leaders in the state’s social and economic growth.
