A tragic incident at Shukla Multi-Speciality Hospital has shaken the city, as a 46-year-old woman, Draupadi Sahu, wife of Pilu Ram Sahu, from Reewanghan, died allegedly due to medical negligence. The incident has triggered chaos and protests at the hospital premises.

According to reports, Draupadi underwent a hysterectomy at the hospital a few days ago and was discharged. She was called back today for what was described as a routine procedure to “remove stitches.” However, during the examination, doctors informed her family that another minor surgery was required.

She was rushed to the operation theatre, but shortly afterward, news of her death emerged, leaving her family and onlookers in shock. The hospital premises descended into chaos as grieving relatives accused the doctors of gross negligence. Congress youth leader Nikhil Dwivedi, who arrived at the scene with supporters, lambasted the hospital administration and the health department.

He stated:  “Most private hospitals in Rajnandgaon, like Shukla, Sanjivani, and Jai Tulsi, have become death traps rather than treatment centers. They treat patients as customers, not human beings.”  Dwivedi demanded a high-level investigation and insisted that culpable homicide charges be filed against the responsible doctors. Angry protesters also alleged that private hospitals, in collusion with diagnostic centers, exploit patients, while the health department turns a blind eye, leading to frequent such incidents.

The Chief Medical and Health Officer (CMHO) Netram Navratna of Rajnandgaon confirmed receiving preliminary information and announced the formation of a specialist team to investigate the matter. Further action will depend on the investigation’s findings.Meanwhile, the deceased’s family remains at the hospital, inconsolable and demanding justice.

The body has been sent for a postmortem. The incident has sparked widespread outrage in the city, raising serious questions about the functioning of the health department and private hospitals.
