In a charged Lok Sabha session on July 28, Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi led a powerful opposition offensive against the BJP-led government during the debate on Operation Sindoor, India’s military response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack. Backed by incisive speeches from Trinamool Congress (TMC) and Samajwadi Party leaders, the opposition cornered the government, demanding transparency and accountability over security lapses and the operation’s outcomes.

Gaurav Gogoi, the Congress deputy leader in Lok Sabha, delivered a blistering critique of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh’s address, questioning how terrorists infiltrated Pahalgam to kill 26 civilians despite heightened security post-Article 370’s abrogation. “The country wants to know—100 days have passed since the Pahalgam attack, but this government has not brought the terrorists to justice,” Gogoi thundered, accusing the government of evading critical questions.

He further challenged the sudden ceasefire, asking, “If Pakistan was ready to kneel, why did you stop, and before whom did you surrender?” Gogoi also raised concerns about reported losses of Rafale jets, urging the government to disclose the truth about military setbacks.

TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee added fuel to the opposition’s fire, questioning Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s silence on former US President Donald Trump’s claim of mediating a ceasefire between India and Pakistan.

In a sharp jab, Banerjee remarked, “The moment you stand in front of the American President, your height is reduced to 5 feet, and your chest shrinks from 56 inches to 36 inches. Why are you so afraid?” His provocative speech also sparked controversy when he referred to Pakistan-occupied Kashmir as “Pakistan-Governed Azad Kashmir,” drawing objections from the BJP.

Samajwadi Party MP Ramashankar Rajbhar echoed Gogoi’s demand for accountability, questioning why the terrorists responsible for the Pahalgam attack remain at large. In a colorful metaphor, Rajbhar said the nation wanted an “Operation Tandoor” to “roast” the culprits, not just Operation Sindoor, highlighting public frustration with the government’s response.

The opposition’s unified front pressed the government on multiple fronts: the failure to apprehend the Pahalgam attackers, the abrupt halt to Operation Sindoor, and the lack of clarity on foreign involvement, particularly in light of Trump’s claims. Congress MP Deepender Hooda further demanded that India refrain from playing cricket with Pakistan and modernize its armed forces, while NCP (SP) MP Supriya Sule emphasized the need for justice for victims’ families.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh defended Operation Sindoor, describing it as a “decisive” strike that targeted over 100 terrorists across the Line of Control, asserting that India’s response was measured and non-escalatory. He refuted Trump’s ceasefire claims, stating that Pakistan’s DGMO requested a pause in operations on May 12, a dialogue India accepted to avoid escalation.

However, the opposition dismissed these explanations as inadequate, with Gogoi asserting that the government was “hiding behind the Lieutenant Governor” instead of holding Home Minister Amit Shah accountable for intelligence failures.

The 16-hour debate, marked by fiery exchanges, underscored the opposition’s resolve to hold the government accountable. Congress, TMC, and Samajwadi Party leaders, through their compelling oratory, not only challenged the BJP’s narrative but also resonated with public demands for clarity on national security. As the discussion continues, the nation watches closely to see how the government addresses these pressing concerns.
