Senior BJP leader Rekha Meshram said that International Women’s Day, observed every year on March 8 across the world, is not merely a day of celebration but an opportunity to reaffirm society’s commitment to respect, equality and empowerment of women.
In a statement released here on the occasion of International Women’s Day, Dr. Meshram said the day is dedicated to recognizing women’s social, political, cultural and economic contributions while spreading awareness about their rights and dignity.
She said the word “woman” itself represents compassion, courage, loyalty and dedication. According to her, women continue to stand strong even in difficult circumstances and play a crucial role in strengthening families and society.

Dr. Meshram noted that the origins of International Women’s Day date back to the early 20th century. In 1908, women in the United States protested for better working conditions and voting rights. Later, in 1975, the United Nations officially recognized March 8 as International Women’s Day.
She emphasized that the main objective of the day is to ensure respect, rights and opportunities for women, raise voices against gender discrimination and violence, and promote women’s participation in education, health and employment.
Referring to history, she said many courageous women played an important role in India’s freedom struggle, including Rani Durgavati and Rani Lakshmibai, who sacrificed their lives for the country.
She also highlighted the contributions of Savitribai Phule, who opened schools for girls despite severe social opposition, along with Fatima Sheikh, who helped educate young girls.

Dr. Meshram further credited B. R. Ambedkar for ensuring constitutional rights for women, including equality in employment, maternity protection and reforms such as the Hindu Code Bill that strengthened women’s rights in marriage, inheritance and property.
She said that today women have proven their capability in every field, including politics, science, sports and education. However, she noted that challenges such as gender inequality, domestic violence, child marriage and unequal access to education and employment still exist and require collective efforts from society to overcome.
A Committed and Disciplined Political Worker
In Rajnandgaon’s political circles, Dr. Rekha Meshram is known as a disciplined and experienced BJP leader. She has served as a senior councillor in the Municipal Corporation and also held the position of Leader of the Opposition.
Despite facing occasional disappointments in political life, she has remained committed to the party and public service.
Local observers often describe her as a simple and composed leader who believes in organizational discipline and grassroots work.
She has also been supportive of women’s leadership in local governance, including the tenure of Shobha Soni, who became the city’s first woman mayor.
Concluding her message, Dr. Meshram said women are the foundation of society and that true social progress is impossible without their dignity, rights and equal participation.
