Police from Basantpur police station in Rajnandgaon district have arrested two women who had been absconding for nearly two years in connection with a land fraud case involving forgery and cheating. The accused were produced before a court and subsequently sent to Durg jail on judicial remand.

According to police officials, the case dates back to August 10, 2024, when a complainant reported that agricultural land located in village Katulboard, recorded under Khasra No. 48/1 with an area of 1.10 decimal in the names of his mother and another woman, had been fraudulently sold to multiple buyers. The alleged fraud was carried out by preparing a fake power of attorney dated August 10, 2023, by the main आरोपी Pratap Majumdar along with his associates.

Following the complaint, Basantpur police registered Crime No. 357/2024 under Sections 419, 420, 467, 468, 471, and 34 of the Indian Penal Code and initiated an investigation. During the probe, police had earlier arrested the main accused Pratap Majumdar, along with Hemant Sen and Keshav Devangan, and filed a charge sheet in court. However, two female accused had remained absconding since then.

Acting under the directions of Superintendent of Police Ankita Sharma, Additional Superintendent of Police Kirtan Rathore, and City Superintendent of Police Vaishali Jain, a special police team was formed under the leadership of Station House Officer Inspector Eman Sahu to trace the absconders. Based on a tip-off, police conducted a search operation in the Durg–Bhilai region and apprehended the two women from Boraai area in Durg district.

The arrested accused have been identified as:

  • Rukmani Majumdar (38)
  • Saroj Nirmalkar (40)

During interrogation, both women allegedly confessed that they had impersonated the actual landowners at the registration office by affixing their own photographs on sale documents, thereby facilitating the fraudulent land transactions at the behest of the main accused.

Police formally arrested the accused and presented them before the court. After the court issued a jail warrant, both were lodged in Durg jail.

Officials stated that Inspector Eman Sahu, Sub-Inspector Devdas Bharti, Head Constable Seema Jain, Constable Atarhar Ali, Krishna Thakur, Women Constables Rajshri Markam, and Anupama Chandravanshi played key roles in the successful operation.
