In a devastating incident that has shaken Chhattisgarh’s burgeoning industrial sector, a massive steel plant structure collapsed late Friday evening in the Bhilai industrial area, claiming the lives of at least five workers and leaving several others critically injured. The collapse occurred at the Bhilai Steel Plant (SAIL), one of India’s oldest and largest integrated steel facilities, during routine maintenance work on a conveyor belt system in the coke oven battery section. Eyewitnesses described a sudden rumble followed by a cascade of twisted metal and concrete, trapping workers under debris around 8:45 PM.

Emergency response teams, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), local fire services, and medical units from the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), rushed to the site. By early Saturday morning, rescuers had pulled out the five deceased—identified as local laborers Ravi Kumar (32), Sanjay Patel (28), Manoj Sahu (35), Anita Devi (29), and Rajesh Yadav (40)—while three others were airlifted to AIIMS Raipur in critical condition with multiple fractures and internal injuries. Officials estimate that up to 10 workers may have been present at the time, with fears that more could be trapped.

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai expressed profound grief over the loss, announcing an ex-gratia payment of ₹10 lakh each to the families of the deceased and ₹5 lakh for the injured. “This is a heartbreaking tragedy. We will conduct a thorough investigation to ensure such lapses never occur again,” Sai stated in a press briefing from Raipur. The state government has ordered a high-level probe led by the Director General of Mines and Geology, focusing on potential violations of safety protocols under the Factories Act, 1948. Preliminary findings suggest the structure, built over three decades ago, may have weakened due to corrosion and overload from recent production ramps aimed at meeting national steel demands.

This incident has reignited debates on workplace safety in Chhattisgarh, a state that contributes significantly to India’s steel output but has seen a 15% rise in industrial accidents over the past year, according to state labor department data. Labor unions, including the Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC), have called for an immediate shutdown of similar aging facilities until audits are completed, staging protests outside the plant gates.

SAIL management has pledged full cooperation and temporary suspension of operations in the affected unit, impacting daily output by an estimated 2,000 tonnes. As investigations continue, families of the victims gather in mourning, demanding justice and systemic reforms to protect the state’s industrial workforce.
