Signal Timing Revamp Eases Traffic Congestion in Rajnandgaon, Commute Time Slashed

Police-led scientific traffic study cuts a two-minute crossing to just 45 seconds at key city intersections

In a major relief for daily commuters, the Rajnandgaon Police have successfully streamlined the city’s traffic system by modifying signal timings at key intersections following a scientific traffic study. The changes have resulted in a visible reduction in congestion, with travel time at some crossings dropping from nearly two minutes to just 45 seconds.

The initiative was carried out under the guidance of Superintendent of Police Ms. Ankita Sharma, with Traffic In-Charge Navratan Kashyap leading on-ground inspections and traffic flow analysis at major junctions across the city. Earlier, traffic signals at all crossings operated on a uniform 30-second cycle for each direction, regardless of vehicle density, which often resulted in long queues and unnecessary bottlenecks.

Based on vehicle density, peak-hour pressure, and directional traffic volume, signal timings have now been optimized and set between 15 to 20 seconds, ensuring smoother movement and quicker signal clearance.

Immediate Impact Observed

Police officials stated that traffic management efforts will continue through public awareness campaigns, strict enforcement of traffic rules, and by incorporating feedback from citizens. The department aims to further enhance road safety and commuter convenience in the coming days.

The revised signal system has delivered instant results. Commuters who earlier required nearly two minutes to cross certain intersections are now able to do so within approximately 45 seconds. The benefits observed include:

  • Reduced travel time
  • Lower fuel consumption
  • Decrease in vehicular pollution
  • Improved and faster passage for ambulances and emergency vehicles

Decision Based on Field Study

The Traffic Department conducted a detailed field study during peak hours, analyzing vehicle count, waiting time, and congestion duration. The study revealed that prolonged red signals were causing vehicle accumulation at crossings, worsening traffic jams. Following expert consultation and data-driven assessment, the decision to shorten signal durations was implemented.
