The Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is witnessing increasing adoption in rural areas of Rajnandgaon district, with beneficiaries reporting significant savings and improved power reliability. In a notable example, Jitendra Sahu, Sarpanch of Bhothipar Khurd Gram Panchayat under Rajnandgaon block, has installed a 3 kW rooftop solar system at his residence, resulting in zero monthly electricity bills.
Sahu shared that his household previously incurred electricity expenses ranging between ₹1,200 and ₹1,500 per month, depending on consumption. With the installation of the solar panels, his electricity costs have been eliminated, and any surplus power generated will provide additional financial returns under the scheme’s provisions.
The total installation cost of the rooftop solar system was approximately ₹2 lakh. Under the scheme, he received a subsidy of ₹78,000 from the Central Government and ₹30,000 from the State Government, totaling ₹1.08 lakh. The remaining amount was financed through a bank loan with easy installment options, making the investment more accessible.

Encouraged by his experience, Sahu has been actively motivating villagers to adopt rooftop solar solutions under the scheme. He is also conducting awareness campaigns to educate residents about the benefits and application process. His efforts have already inspired several households in the village to install solar plants.
According to Sahu, the initiative has also helped address the recurring problem of power outages in rural areas, ensuring uninterrupted electricity supply and improving quality of life. He expressed gratitude to Narendra Modi and Vishnu Deo Sai for launching and implementing the scheme, which he described as transformative for rural communities.
Officials believe that growing awareness and successful local examples like this will further accelerate the adoption of renewable energy solutions in villages, contributing to sustainable development and energy independence.
