Cult Bollywood favorite Rangeela is set to return to theaters in a newly restored 4K ultra-HD version on November 28, nearly three decades after its original release in 1995. The restoration has been spearheaded by Ultra Media, which announced that the remastered version will include enhanced visuals and remixed surround sound, offering audiences a nostalgic yet richer cinematic experience.

Directed by Ram Gopal Varma, Rangeela became a cultural phenomenon upon release, redefining mainstream Bollywood with its contemporary storytelling, stylish choreography, and bold urban aesthetic. The film starred Aamir Khan, Urmila Matondkar, and Jackie Shroff, with Urmila’s role as “Mili” elevating her to nationwide stardom.

Ultra Media CEO Sushil Kumar Agrawal said the decision to restore Rangeela was driven by sustained popular demand. “The film’s music, fashion, and love story still resonate with audiences. Bringing it back in 4K is like reopening a time capsule from the 90s — and we’re excited for a whole new generation to experience it in theaters,” he said.

One of the most enduring legacies of Rangeela is its soundtrack, composed by A.R. Rahman, featuring chart-toppers such as “Tanha Tanha,” “Yaaron Sun Lo Zara,” and “Rangeela Re”. Music historians credit the album with introducing a new sonic wave in Bollywood, blending pop synths with Indian classical nuances.

Film critics note that Rangeela not only influenced Bollywood wardrobe trends — from crop tops to bright, fun streetwear — but also reshaped the portrayal of romance in Hindi cinema.

The re-release comes at a time when studios are increasingly restoring classics for theatrical runs, responding to growing nostalgia among millennials and Gen-Z audiences.
